Goals

Why is reaching your goal so hard?

Here is one reason: your goals are not specific.

For example, I am learning Spanish. I do not have any particular reason to learn it, it is not that I ever travel to Spanish speaking countries. I guess it is just for fun and to keep my brain engaged and fresh.

However, learning Spanish is a vague goal. When I set a goal to learn Spanish, I could never do it. It is a goal I set back in college, and spectacularly failed.

Then last year I set a specific goal. I decided that I wanted to get a golden owl in Duolingo, a language learning app, by finishing all the levels available on it. I finished it in a few months. As a result, I increased my Spanish vocabulary with around 1000 new words and learnt the basics of grammar. Then I took a break for a few months because I had no new goal to pursue!

Then I invented a new goal, and that was to read an entire book in Spanish. That seemed like a great new target. It would feel like a fantastic accomplishment.

So I am back to learning Spanish. I find it hard to read a book, so I decided to increase my vocab and improve my knowledge of grammar, so I got a new app called memrise this time, paid for the full version, and now I am going at it full throttle. I have learned over 100 new words and phrases in the last 3 days.

I am also asking my Spanish friends for a recommendation of a book that I should start with reading. Before the year turns, I want to achieve this goal. I have 2 months to go.

Learning Spanish is vague. Being able to read a book in Spanish is specific and inspiring. My new goal gives me something to look forward to. By taking actions for a few minutes every day, and using a lot of my idle downtime towards it, I am well on the path to achieve something that I always wanted to do.

I want you to think of this as a way to learn new skills. What skills do you want to learn before the year is over?

You have two months left before 2019 bids us goodbye. Just over 60 days.

Could you do something to take your career to the next level in 2020? What could you start learning? What could you start building? What influence can you start spreading?

Every lawyer wants to improve their legal skills. They want to have more clients that pay premium rates. However, what are the actions you can take to get there by January 2020? What can be a specific goal for you that you could work through November and December?

Or are you going to postpone that work? What is stopping you from getting that breakthrough that you want?

Another reason we do not reach our goals soon enough is that we keep giving it too much time! We postpone critical action to the future. It does not require all your time or mental bandwidth to achieve progress. We all have some extra time that we do not use well. What if you could spend a few hours every week towards achieving your goal? Do what you can do today, do not wait for a perfect day in the future to start something you always wanted to achieve.

If you ask me, the 2 months left are super valuable. I want to finish my 2019 on a strong note and begin 2020 powerfully. The only way that is going to happen is if we work hard and strategically for the 2 months left of 2019.
