Duration of internship

How did you Apply?

Through one of my personal contacts.

First day formalities

Judicial Intern in the Chambers of the Hon. Justice Mrs. Revati Mohite Dere. Bombay High Court. (15th January 2019 to 31st March 2019)

I applied for this internship through one of my personal contacts. On 15th January 2019I was supposed to reach Court Room Number 59 of the Bombay High Court at 10:00 AM. This was informed to me by Justice Revati Mohite Dere’s PA Mrs. Neha Chitnis (she was very welcoming and supportive). Luckily during the time of my internship, the court was a division bench of Criminal Roster. I was briefed by the Hon. Justice Revati Dere regarding my work.

Main tasks

My major work was to make briefs of the cases that are listed in the week. The bench was a criminal roster bench, thus dealing with varsity of criminal cases. Main tasks included attending daily hearings and making short notes on the same. I also did due diligence of the daily orders and judgements (if any). Assisted the Hon. Justice Mrs. Revati Mohite Dere with research work. I was also asked to prepare the factual matrix of the judgements that were to be pronounced and was also given a judgement writing task.

Good things

I used to carry my own CRPC and IPC materials to work for quick reference though anything is easily accessible for judicial interns from the Judge’s Library. I got to learn a lot about how a high court functions, how cases are filed, how senior advocates as learned counsels present their case submissions, how judges hear and decide the cases, how laws we learn in college find application in day to day life. Sitting on the other side of the bench, listening to many senior counsels was powerful and a good experience. Interning under a Judge helps you access the Judge’s Library, secret lobby. Doing this internship I could also amplify my contacts in the High Court. I got a good start in the matter of Criminal Rules of Practice.

Stipend (if any)

No Stipend. However, few coffee breaks with the Hon. Justice Mrs. Revati Dere ma’am while discussing the case was more than any stipend.

Office Timings

The official timings were 10: 30 am to 05:00 pm, but I used to be in the court by 07:00 pm.

Accommodation and Commuting

I live in Navi Mumbai so I didn’t need to arrange for accommodation. But PGs in and around the Bombay High Court is available.

Personal Opinion

Now something about the Hon. Justice Revati Dere Ma’am. The Hon. Justice Revati Dere Ma’am was very friendly, used to guide me regarding my future. Even though she was busy with loads of work, she still managed to seek time once in a week to nurture me. I even had few coffee breaks with ma’am while discussing the case.

She’s been more like a mother to me than a High Court Judge. She’s always been so kind and willing to help whenever I needed help. She was never judgemental. Richly blessed is how I feel working under her. Yes, she has been like a second mother to me. And I love, respect and appreciate her more than you could possibly know. I thank her for making my tenure (52 days) here an unforgettable one. In future, I wish to see the Hon. Justice Revati Mohite Dere Ma’am as the Chief Justice of India.
