Should Modern Day Lawyers Learn Coding?

0
coding skills for lawyers

In this blog post, Pratyusha Kar, pursuing a Diploma in Entrepreneurship Administration and Business Laws from NUJS, Kolkata, describes why should lawyers learn coding.

Apple luminary- Steve Jobs, former American President- Barack Obama, eminent scientist-Stephen Hawking , all are in the same view, everyone should learn to programme. But should lawyers also learn to program or learn to code?

The Opinion is different from different people.

  • Some say that learning codes do not fall under the duties and obligations of the lawyers[1] and instead of reading a Python Documentation a lawyer’s priority is to serve his or client.[2]
  • In view of the others, as technology is controlling every industry in the present day world, learning of codes by the lawyers is of utmost importance.[3]

This article will try to explain about the code and its relation with the lawyers, benefits of learning code by a lawyer and its application and present status of ‘basic coding principles’ education in law schools.

Suvrajit Bhattacharya, Learning Officer at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, on how he is using the NUJS Executive Certificate Course in Sexual Harassment Prevention and Workplace Diversity in his career

0

Suvrajit Bhattacharyya is an experienced professional with over 3 years of experience in Learning & Development. He is presently working as a Learning Officer at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, Kolkata.

He successfully completed the NUJS Executive Certificate Course in Sexual Harassment Prevention and Workplace Diversity and over here, he shares his course experience. Over to Suvrajit:

I have a master’s degree in Business Management, Marketing, HR & Accounts from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata and a master’s degree in Learning Sciences and Human Resources Development from Indian Society for Training & Development.

I currently work with Hyatt Regency Kolkata as a Learning Officer.  Prior to this, I worked with Tata Consultancy Service (TCS) as a Business Process Analyst in the asset management domain.

My current role at Hyatt involves taking care of the learning and development for the entire organization, be it classroom training, online training or on the job training.

In our training, there is a particular segment on sexual harassment and I wanted to have a thorough knowledge of this domain.

I was looking for a course which would help me in this and I came across an advertisement of NUJS Executive Certificate Course in Sexual Harassment Prevention and Workplace Diversity. It was bang on and I decided to enroll for the course.

Since this course has the NUJS backing when you tell people that you have done this course, it gets you instant recognition and people look up to you

The course content is really good and practical, with lots of case studies and examples. After this course my knowledge about the Sexual Harassment Laws is not superficial, I have in-depth knowledge of the subject and I can apply this knowledge to my work.

Now, when I take a session on this subject, I can get into the nitty gritty and explain the concept. I have a hold on the subject.

This course has made me more knowledgeable, confident and most importantly; aware of what to say and what not to when dealing with these cases.

I would strongly recommend this course to anyone in Human Resource or in the Learning and Development department of any organization.

Hierarchy of Courts and Justice System in Sri Lanka:

This article is written by Ajay Jose, pursuing M.A. Business Laws from NUJS, Kolkata. The article describes the Hierarchy of Courts & Justice System in Sri Lanka.

Law is a set of rules to regulate behaviour of people in a given society at a given time. According to Hobbes[1]- law is an obligatory rule of conduct. The commands of him or them that have coercive power.

Salmond [2] states that law is the body of principals recognised and applied by the state in the administration of justice. There could be legal rules and moral rules. Legal rules are called laws and non-legal rules are called moral rules/customs/ethics. Legal rules cannot be breached and it is punishable. E.g. Cheating, robbery, rape, murder etc. Non legal rules are not punishable. E.g. Drinking alcohol on pooja days, not giving room in a bus to an elderly, unmarried couple living together.

Rakesh Gupta, a qualified Company Secretary, on why he enrolled for the NUJS MA in Business Laws course

0

Rakesh Gupta is a qualified Company Secretary, presently working with a CS firm as an assistant manager. He is currently pursuing the NUJS MA in Business Laws course and over here, he shares his experience with the course so far. Over to Rakesh:

I’m working with a CS firm as Assistant Manager.  Prior to this, I was working with an export-oriented manufacturing company as the Group Company Secretary.

In my current role, I am responsible for all types of secretarial work and other compliance related tasks for client companies. Apart from my professional goals, I’m passionate about social causes as well. I make it a point to take out time whenever possible,  to volunteer for social causes. I used to regularly volunteer with The Freeset Trust; an NGO working for the betterment of women in the Sonagacchi red-light area of Kolkata; teaching them life-skills necessary to truly experience freedom like reading, writing and basic health care.

Initially, I got to know about this course from my friends and on further research, I liked the course syllabus.  However, I wasn’t sure of joining it that time.  Later I got to know that one of my CS faculty members, who is a qualified CA and CS both has joined the course. When I spoke to him, he himself recommended this course to me. This encouraged me to join the course because if someone so learned and established was enrolling for this course, I had to be worthwhile.  I first joined the 5-day free course, the free course gave me visibility into the curriculum of the full course and after that, I enrolled in the course.

The writing assignments which we have to submit as part of this course has encouraged me to research and write extensively. This has tremendously improved my writing skills and has encouraged me to start a blog sometime soon.

I have already recommended this course to my friends and colleagues and many are expected to join soon.

I believe that this course will be equally beneficial for people from law and non-law background, especially for professionals like CA and CS.
